Matinyana Fonds homepageRaymond Matinyana Fonds: Adoption

By adopting a student through the Raymond Matinyana Fund you finance the education of a young South-African who would otherwise be unable to study.

Adopting a student

Adopting a student means that you take it upon yourself to cover her/his study costs. This can be done individually or as a group - for instance with friends, through your work, organization, school or club. In this case, be sure that we know the name of the contact person.

In principle you agree to adopt a student for the full extent of her/his education and this is the principle on which we make educational grants to the students. If for any reason you are unable to continue your support for the next school year, please inform us before November of the previous year so that we can distribute the grants accordingly.

How much does it cost?

The grants cover college fees, books and stationery and a contribution towards the costs of travel and housing. College fees are on average 700 euros per year, books etc cost around 150 euros per year and the contribution to travel and housing are about 350 euros per year. Thus the cost of adopting a student is 1200 euros per year. It is possible to adopt a student by paying 100 per month or a single payment of 1200 per year.

Length of study is generally 2 or 3 years for a technical diploma or 3-4 years for university. Of course, some students will need more time if they do not pass their exams the first time.

Student selection

For the reasons given below, bursaries are given exclusively to students from Nelson Mandela Township and the immeidiate surroundings.

Matching of student and donor

This can be done by agreement. You may wish to state your preferences. If you have a preference for funding a student for technical training or for university, plese let us know. Depending on the number of students who qualify, we will make a suggestion. Adoption only goes into effect once all parties have agreed. When matching student and donor we will, as far as possible, take your preferences into consideration, but considering the limited number of students who qualify for a bursary, this may not always be possible.

Contact with students

We have been advised by many sources that contact between donor and student is to be discouraged. Because of the inequality between the two parties, such contact may be particularly difficult for the student. In addition to this, there may be difficulties betweeen students who are adopted and those whose schooling is paid for through donations. For this reason we do not tell the students the details of how their education is being funded. We will, however, definitely use your donation to fund a student's education and keep you informed about her/his progress.

Payment

To make monthly payments of 100 euros, you can make a standing order in favour of the Matinyana Fund. For this you can use the authorisation form (in Dutch) or arrange it through your own bank. It is also possible to make an annual payment of 1200 euros, but in this case we would request you to make such payments before the start of the academic year so that funds are with us before the end of January.
