Main aims of Nemato Rowing Club

- transformation -

The Nemato Rowing Club is a rowing development project for the Nelson Mandela Township. It established and develops rowing as a sport for this community and is a major transformation project. It is the main sports transformation project in the Ndlambe municipality, and the first for rowing in the Eastern Cape. The club plays a very important role to play in transforming rowing in South Africa into a fully representative sport. The importance of the club has been recognised by the Minister of Sport & and Recreation who opened the club. The club won the 2006 Jack Cheetham Award as best sports development project in South Africa.

- top sport -

It is the only sport in Nemato that is focusing on developing athletes for top level sport and aiming for top national and international competition. The ultimate aim is to get rowers from Nemato to participate in World Championships and Olympics.

- empowerment -

The holistic program includes education and life skills in addition to rowing. Through these it aims to empower participants as educated, rounded, strong personalities with opportunities to uplift themselves from desperate township life into a promising future.

- skills & job creation -

The project is fully located in the community and intends to develop local skills to sustain the growth of the club. People from the townships get a chance to become skilled coaches and get skills in maintaining the equipment and running the club. There will be learner jobs growing into skilled jobs. Those skills will give people further job opportunities.
