June
16 2006: Youth Day
On June 16, 1976 South African learners started upraisings against the apartheid
education system. June 16 is now an annual public holiday in South Africa called
Youth Day. In 2006 the celebrations were special: 30 years after the
upraisings. South Africa was celebrating Youth Month.
The celebrations in Port Alfred were very special: the Minister of Sport
and Recreation visited the Youth Day Celebrations for the official
opening of Nelson Mandela Township Rowing Club.
